If you're applying and want some advice on portfolios, take a look at mine here.
I spoke a bit about my Foundation course here.
But overall I think GO FOR IT. Learning is valuable and if you think that going to Uni will benefit you, go for it. Art School isn't for everyone and you do have to jump through certain hoops- but you will meet amazing people, try things you never thought you would and have access to great workshop spaces.
